Apply with your CV to email@example.com or Kapiti Dry Cleaners Limited PO Box 375, Waikanae, 5250 The best fertiliser is the farmers footsteps! by Hannah Zwartz The best fertiliser is the farmers footsteps This old saying is never truer than at this time of year when warmth-loving pests and diseases are ready to strike. A regular patrolling stroll in the long summer evenings or mornings gets you up close and personal with your garden. The closer you are, the sooner youll notice the first spots of blight or the first few caterpillars, enabling you to nip problems in the bud before they take over the whole garden. A warm, wet summer has made tomato blight an issue for many gardeners. Try and keep the airflow going by picking off affected leaves (burn them, or bin in sealed plastic bags), pinching out tips and pruning lower leaves if needed. If blight persists you may have to rip plants out, growing them somewhere different next year (and maybe further apart). As the air warms up insect pests are also emerging from eggs and larvae into their chewing, sucking and flying forms. In the past week Ive seen fluffybums (juvenile passionvine hoppers), cabbage whites and baby shield bugs (these look like mini black ladybirds but with shield- shaped rather than round backs), not to mention the mosquitoes. But Ive also happily seen ladybirds, parasitic wasps (which look like long black shiny flies, and lay their eggs inside caterpillars), and hoverflies (whose larvae eat aphids.) If I reached for the spray every time I saw a bug, Id be killing all these good guys (not to mention our friends the bees) along with the pests. I prefer to try and catch pests early and pick them off by hand. And its a good ex- cuse for a garden stroll! ‚ Seal moisture into the soil by topping up mulch after rain. A good thick layer helps keep roots cool and moist and feeds soil life. ‚ Summer prune any trees that are overly leafy- cutting now doesnt stimu- late new growth in the way that winter pruning will. Prune stonefruit like plums and peaches after harvest. ‚ Keep filling gaps with basil, lettuce and bush beans, or leeks for winter. ‚ Enjoy your harvests! The first tomatoes, cucumbers and beans taste all the sweeter for the wait. ‚ Let lawns grow a bit longer, and dont fret if they brown off. They will bounce back once it rains. Plant: Late beans and zucchini, winter leeks, basil, lettuce, spring onions, zinnias, cosmos Sow: Carrots (direct), beetroot, phacelia (direct), lettuce, bush beans, fennel.
